When Miguel Cotto completed his dominant performance in June-that ended with a 4th round knockout over Daniel Geale. The boxing world over the next two years could be turned into a Japanese sci-fi flick. Starring Cotto as Godzilla, Canelo Alvarez as Mothra, and Gennady Golovkin as King Kong.
The potential for epic ring clashes between these 3 fighters, with multiple meetings occurring from Southern California to New York City is palatable. The money is there. The fans have been there. The only thing left is for the beasts to find each other.
As in all movies starring Godzilla, Miguel Cotto will determine the circumstances and time of the first clash. Right now, he is eyeing to start with the winged beast Mothra Alvarez. It’s the smart move and the decision popular scripts would stick to. Why would Cotto take on the giant gorilla Golovkin first-that has destroyed Southern California the past year, searching for a title Cotto has? King Kong Golovkin provides the biggest threat of defeat.
Even more, when facing King Kong, even Godzilla would need help. By Cotto facing Alvarez first. he could gain an ally, to stop the carnage of Golovkin in the form of a back door win (Cotto beats Alvarez. Golovkin beats Cotto. Alvarez beats Golovkin), saving face in defeat.
Now I realize, real life is not the movies. Canelo Alvarez has a far greater chance of beating Miguel Cotto, than Mothra does against Godzilla. Still, the cult entertainment feeling remains. Mothra Alvarez and King Kong Golovkin are causing chaos in the boxing world. And Godzilla Cotto has reestablished himself in NYC, looking to balance the powers.
