On Malignaggi vs Garcia

Stephen King once wrote, “it’s a cash and carry world. Sometimes you pay a little. Mostly it’s a lot. Sometimes it’s everything you have.” To think King was imagining a prizefighter when he penned those lines would be absurd. However, when used as an analogy to the career of a professional boxer. It can be viewed as synonomous. In the beginning, pure athleticism is enough to get by. The majority of the time it’s equal opposition. Then sometimes, it is David vs. Goliath.

On paper, Paul Malignaggi has just a little more than a snowballs chance in hell of coming out on top against Danny Garcia. Age, resume, and same opponent wins all point in favor of Garcia. At last check most gambling sites have Malignaggi as an 11/2 dog. Then again, that is what’s on paper. The same ink that visualizes laws also creates fairy tales. Malignaggi has more than a punchers chance of winning this fight. His ring experience and awareness provide him and his fans this confidence. Still, like King penned in Storm of the Century. Professional boxing is a cash and carry world and for Paulie to pull the upset. It will most likely will take everything he has.

Fortunately for Garcia and Malignaggi, the outcome of this contest does little to change their individual destiny. Garcia will continue to move through the 147 lb. class and face names like Khan, Bradley, and Thurman next year. As for Paulie Malignaggi, time is a bitch and no one gets younger without help. He is on a fight to fight basis now and even with the upset, he probably only has a few fights left in the tank. And that’s cool too. Malignaggis work as a boxing analyst/commentator has been received well and in a world with endless platforms of media to drive the sport. Malignaggi will always have life around the ring.
