Broner vs. Theophane PBC on Spike Fight Report

Premier Boxing Champions continued its PBC on Spike series with a main event featuring Adrien Broner vs. Ashley Theophane. Originally billed as a match for Broner’s  WBA Super Lightweight title, the failure of Broner to make weight left his title vacated and up for grabs only for Theophane. Broadcast from the DC Armory in Washington DC and hosted by Dana Jacobsen. Commentary was provided by Scott Hanson, Jimmy Smith, and special guest Antonio Tarver. Along with the main event, the television audience was also given a co-feature with up and coming lightweight Robert Easter Jr. in a bout with veteran Algenis Mendez.

Main Event

Adrian Broner vs. Ashley Theophane Super Lightweight

By the end of the 1st., the prowess of Broner over Theophane was evident. Broner would land hard body shots along with an intense flurry that had the crowd on their feet in the 3rd. expecting the end was near. Theophane would survive by dodging and absorbing blows his way through the 5th.. Still, the damage he was receiving at the hands of Broner was undeniable and the excitement was building. However, then something changed.

Whether running ahead on the cards or sensing a stout chin in Theophane, Broner began to slow his pace and conserve energy in the 6th. The pace was so drastic in contrast to the first half the boos from the crowd became aubible by the end of the 8th. The shun of the audience must have struck a cord in Broner. When the first opening on Theophane in the 9th was exploited  with another intense flurry, that forced the referee to stop the fight. Adrien Broner wins via TKO9 and improves to 32-2.

Co-Feature 

Robert Easter Jr. vs. Algenis Mendez Lightweight 10 rd.

Armed with a stiff left jab and a loaded right, Easter Jr. controlled the opening rounds over Mendez. The pace would shift briefly to Mendez  when he landed a clean right in the 3rd. However, the response of Easter Jr. in unloading one combination after the next would ultimately spell the demise of Mendez.

Out on his feet at the end of the 4th, Mendez would only last a couple minutes in the 5th. When a solid right caught Mendez reeling from a lead left and ended his night on the canvass. Robert Easter Jr. wins over Algenis Mendez via KO5 and remains undefeated at 17-0.
