PBC Garcia/Guerrero Fight Report

Considered to be the first major card of 2016 for Premier Boxing Champions, the already scheduled event gained an extra level of intrigue. When the WBC announced the winner of the main event between Danny “Swift” Garcia and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero would claim Floyd Mayweather Jr. vacated welterweight title. Set in Los Angeles at the Staples Center and broadcast on Fox, the Premier Boxing Champions delivered a solid 3 fight card that climaxed with a new WBC Welterweight champion.

Main Event: WBC Welterweight Championship

Danny “Swift” Garcia vs Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero

Guerrero proved his veteran status as he asserted his position on early and constant on Garcia. He would move forward and force Garcia to counter and evade. Solid pops from both fighters landed through 5th, but by the end of the 6th, Garcia was gaining accuracy and control of the fight. By the 9th, the contest became a showcase for Garcia. The rushing bull in Guerrero was sidestepped and pierced at will by the matador in Garcia.

The fight would go the distance and featured a free for all ending that had both fighters swinging for the fences. The heart of Guerrero would ultimately win over the crowd, but it was the clinic Garcia put on that would win over the judges. Danny Garcia remained undefeated via unanimous decision and became the new WBC welterweight champion.

Undercard

Sammy Vasquez vs. Aron Martinez Welterweight 12rd.

Vasquez opened the fight with a cool confidence that placed a defensive Martinez on the ropes early. Martinez would attempt to open the ring by coming to the center in the 3rd, but was easily trumped and forced back into the small square that Vasquez chose to deliver his straight lefts and rights. Hope for Martinez faded, as his vague offense completely disappeared towards the end of the 6th. Martinez stopped himself on his stool. Sammy Vasquez wins via tko6 and remains undefeated at 21-0.

Dominic Breazeale vs Amir Mansour Heavyweight 10rd.

The thought this would be an easy night for Breazeale vanished as Mansour came forward and refused to back up. Mansour would land in the 2nd and have Brazeale on the canvas in the 3rd. Facing certain upset, Brazeale finally answered with wild shots of his own on a somewhat gassed Mansour. Though Mansour showed determination through the 5th, Brazeale eventually caught him with an overhand right during a corner exchange. Mansour would suffer a broken jaw and the contest ended between rounds. Brazeale wins by tko5 and escapes with an unblemished record at 17-0.
